The iPhone is one of the hottest gadgets to come out in this lifetime, why you ask? The answer is simple. It’s not just an ordinary GSM phone; the iPhone is a handheld computer WITH a SIM-phone function. All the hype and anticipation of getting one, when it was released it sold over 500,000 units on just the first two days. But, there is a catch. If you want an iPhone, you have to get a service plan from only one network, AT&T.
                In other words, the iPhone is locked to only one service provider and that is AT&T. Locking a phone to a service provider is a common practice in the United States, but the lock used by Apple and AT&T is different. Not only did they lock the phone to one service provider, but they locked the phone to a special SIM card which makes it even tougher to unlock an iPhone. The design itself of the unit is for AT&T. But this doesn’t mean it’s unbreakable. There are still ways of using the iPhone without a service plan.
                The first option is using the iPhone as an iPod and a web browser. There are users of the phone which doesn’t really want the phone function, just its media player and web functions. The problem is you can’t activate an iPhone without connecting first to iTunes then registering the phone for a service plan. But there is a way. Kent Pribbernow reported in his iPhone blog that he was able to use an iPhone without a service plan. He says that you can register two phones in one plan, so you can first activate an iPhone then add a second phone in the FamilyTalk Plan as a replacement and, voila! You have an iPhone without a service plan. The phone will remain activated and you will be able to use the web functions and media functions. DVD John was also able to do the same thing with his iPhone. Rather than tricking the registration of service plan, he tricked the phone itself.
                DVD John was able to set up an automated way that tricks iTunes into thinking it is talking with Apple’s activation servers. The result is similar, a working iPhone without the phone. This is still risky however because Apple could release a new patch to keep the phone dead when it has no service plan.
                Another way is to unlock your iPhone. This is easier said than done as the iPhone proves to be tougher opponent than regular locked GSM phones. But it is possible. There are websites who offer unlocking programs and you can get your iPhone unlocked in a few minutes. If you don’t want to spend about $20 for this, you can hack it yourself. The internet provides step by step instructions on how to do this on your own. But this is very risky as you can brick your and leave you with a dead phone instead of an unlock iPhone. Another downside of this is the fact that the iPhone lacks the radio hardware to function with Sprint or Verizon. This would be useful for those going out of the country; roaming charges can be really high. So sometimes it is better to get a local SIM wherever you may be.
